Issue Position: Income Inequality is a Moral Crisis

Issue Position

As a faith leader, I believe the issue of income inequality is the great moral issue of our time. The gap between the very rich and everyone else is wider than at any time since the 1920's. That's why I'll work to lift middle-class wages, demand the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share, and demand that women get equal pay for equal work.

A thriving economy is one in which every Iowan can thrive and isn't measured by growth alone but also by who is benefiting from the growth. We need an economy that works for workers, not just corporations. A thriving economy is one that provides every hard-working Iowan with the opportunity for meaningful employment, a stable income, and the potential to retire with security.

I support economic development that brings more people into to the middle class, rewards small businesses for their investment in our community, and creates jobs that enable hard working Iowans to support their families. I support the intentional recruitment of business and industry that exhibits care and concern for their employees through a track record of decent wages, give equal pay for equal work, offer good benefits such as paid sick and family leaves, and a work environment that increases workers' capacity to influence their working conditions.
